Grab a Saw

Did you ever want to just do it? You know what I mean. You walk in to your organization and there it sits. The problem. You know you should get rid of it. Maybe you've asked one of the staff before. Maybe you were just hoping someone else would do it. How many of you would just do it?

Well I know one person who would. He's a new executive director at a youth-oriented nonprofit, for which I happen to sit on the board. He's only been there a short time. And, he's just doing it.

He walked in one day to notice a table game that was broken, yet taking up a lot of space. Kids couldn't use it. Maybe it could get fixed someday but that day hadn't arrived. It needed to go. It was too big to easily get out the door. So he grabbed the center director and he grabbed a saw. After they were done, the pieces fit in the trash nicely, and the kids now had more room.

There are other examples in his short tenure. This one grabbed me. This is direct, hands on leadership. No excuses, just action. And I bet there's a good chance the center director will follow his lead and just grab the saw himself the next time the opportunity presents itself.

So, here's my challenge. Look around. Look at your problems. Grab your own saw, and just fix it. Others will follow your lead. Your organization will be better.
