IRS New "Exempt Organizations Select Check"
January 27, 2012
The IRS recently introduced Exempt Organizations Select Check, which is an online search tool that allows users to select an exempt organization and check certain information about its federal tax status and filings. It consolidates three former IRS search sites into one, thereby providing expanded search capability and a more efficient way to search for organizations. This search tool includes searches for organizations that:
- Are eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions (Publication 78 data).
- Have had their tax-exempt status automatically revoked because they have not filed Form 990 series returns or notices annually as required for three consecutive years (Auto-Revocation List).
- Have filed a Form 990-N annual electronic notice (e-Postcard).
Exempt Organizations Select Check data is, generally, updated monthly (Publication 78 was updated quarterly) for organizations whose exemptions were automatically revoked and organizations eligible to receive deductible contributions, and weekly for Form 990-N filings. In addition to searching for a particular organization, you can download a complete list of each of the three types of organizations above.
A good practice would be to make sure that your organization is properly reported on this list. If you have any questions, please contact Terri Rexrode (Health Care Organizations) or Rich Ruvelson (Nonprofit and Government Organizations).
