    Westfields Hospital. Wipfli helps develop a strategic plan and ensure that it won't sit on the shelf.

    Making strategy a part of everyone's daily job.


    Situation

    Westfields Hospital is a full-service, acute-care hospital that affiliates with an on-campus senior living community and a primary care clinic. The organization had developed a strategic plan, but it never became part of the formal management process or fully realized its value.  “Westfields Hospital’s goal was to make strategy a part of everyone’s daily job and to measure that progress was being made toward achieving the strategic objectives of the organization,” said Mary Beth Fitzgerald, RN and Performance Improvement Manager.  “Though it seemed a lofty goal in the beginning, Wipfli guided us down this path.”



    Strategy

    Wipfli analyzed Westfields Hospital’s strategic plans and also performed an assessment of the steering committee by using Predictive Index, a tool that assists with effective teaming and assesses individual motivators. This information helped Wipfli’s team to more effectively facilitate a series of workshops through which the steering committee developed three primary management tools:  a strategy map, a balanced scorecard, and a strategic action plan.



    Benefits

    Having the right tools helped the steering committee hold more productive meetings as they monitored the progress of aligned initiatives and the metrics on the balanced scorecard. To get the full value from this performance management system, the steering committee worked with Wipfli to educate department heads and deploy these tools on a smaller scale to each department.  With this performance management solution in place, leadership has a more proactive, balanced perspective on Westfields Hospital’s vision: To become the progressive, high-quality health care center of choice in western Wisconsin.
