Seven Employee Development Tools

March 01, 2007

Organizations that cultivate employee capabilities not only increase workforce job satisfaction, they also enhance their own companies’ growth and success. One reason is because there’s a clear link between job satisfaction and productivity.

Having a more informed and talented workforce also benefits the employers’ bottom line in other ways. Employees with greater on-the-job expertise demonstrate better problem-solving skills that create higher customer satisfaction levels.

For most employees, opportunities for growth and development are just as important as compensation and benefits. In fact, the chance to improve skills and participate in ongoing learning is key to both employee motivation and retention.

Here are seven ways an organization can promote employee development.

Build a culture of continuous learning. Companies strengthen their businesses when they inspire a desire for constant learning in their employees. From new employee orientation and ongoing training to workshops and seminars, organizations should offer all the necessary types of learning that can contribute to an outstanding knowledge base. Doing so not only ensures employee effectiveness but also encourages the critical-thinking skills that can shape an organization’s enduring success.

Provide opportunities for cross-training. Give employees the chance to learn new skills and share in other workplace responsibilities. It also fosters greater teamwork and deepens mutual respect between co-workers.

Establish mentoring and coaching partnerships. By forging educational and supportive relationships between employees, organizations can boost both performance levels and morale.

Create stretch opportunities. Some employees are driven by the chance to work on challenging assignments. They seek to achieve personal and professional growth through empowerment and accountability. Give them significant projects and room to be challenged.

Provide tuition reimbursement. Reimbursement programs, loans, or scholarships attract and retain employees interested in advancing their education and careers. Employees with advanced education contribute greater expertise and skills to the workplace. Providing time off and reimbursement helps improve job performance and also lets employees know they are valued.

Identify job development goals for each position in the business, then offer the training to meet them. Employees like to know there’s room for career movement and appreciate structure and support to guide their development. Clearly map out career paths and offer ample opportunities for promotion.

Conduct regular appraisals. Employees need goals and performance feedback in order to grow. Conduct annual reviews to recognize their contributions and encourage their continued personal and professional development.
