OVERVIEW

Operation Smile provides surgeries to children in need across the globe. Communication, collaboration and coordination are vital. Here’s how cloud-based solutions and custom software helped power the mission of this nonprofit.

THE CHALLENGE

It can be difficult to work together, share information and leverage over 6,000 volunteers when you’re limited to Excel spreadsheets. Operation Smile knew it could operate more effectively as it continued to grow. After a thorough discovery process, Wipfli identified key areas to optimize efficiency.

THE APPROACH

Wipfli developed a platform that centralized volunteer recruitment, training, deployment and coordination efforts. The volunteer management system also connected existing learning and background verification systems, as well as financial and donor management.

They brought everyone to the table. Not just a developer. Not just change management. Not just engagement. They committed their whole team to us.

Director of Global Volunteer Resources, Operation Smile

THE RESULTS

The system Wipfli developed continues to save Operation Smile thousands of hours. Now, employees and volunteers are able to focus on amplifying their impact instead of manually updating spreadsheets and searching for data across disparate offices. It’s paid off; you can see it in the smiles of more than 17,000 people. The success of this project initiated a new partnership between Wipfli and Microsoft to bring this innovative volunteer management system to nonprofits across the globe.
