The challenge

Libertana’s approach to leadership had helped fuel its success — but could its current model scale to meet the demands of expansion and succession?

With successful stewardship, what began as a family-owned home health agency had grown into an $80 million organization providing a full spectrum of home healthcare services.

Current owners, Jonathan and Miriam Istrin, needed a succession plan to prepare the organization for the future. They brought in Neil Rotter, a nationally recognized healthcare executive, as CEO. Together, they knew that continuing to have all decisions flow through the owners would impede sustainable growth.

They needed a model that would expand decision-making throughout the organization — and develop capable managers into leaders.

The solution

Proven leadership training plus tailored support equaled a launch pad for sustainable growth.

After assessing Libertana’s workflows and growth goals, Wipfli created a roadmap to achieve effective succession and scale leadership.

Leadership Essentials’ first cohort included 14 executive leaders, as well as the owners and the CEO. The second cohort extended leadership development to 36 front-line managers.

Ongoing executive coaching, accountability partners, validated Predictive Index behavioral assessments, 360-degree feedback and more reinforced leadership development as a priority and weaved it into the foundation for growth.

Why was the approach so effective?

  1. The practical application of best practices began on day one; participants can apply new skills in their day-to-day work immediately.
  2. The roadmap helped build buy-in by giving employees structure, input opportunities and clarity around expectations.
  3. The experience and focus were continually evaluated and adjusted to scale along with Libertana’s growth trajectory.
  4. Libertana’s owners and CEO were fully committed to evolution. They led by example and were driving cultural change.

Wipfli provided ongoing support and developed sustainable ways to drive the program’s impact. They’ve been creative and flexible in finding solutions that work within our timelines and budget. As we bring more and more people into the organization, I’m glad we have Wipfli as a long-term partner.

The results

Stronger leaders with enhanced capabilities are ready to scale and succeed.

Libertana is already benefiting from:

  • Stronger, more timely decision-making, with clearer spans of control, effective delegation and a broader group of leaders equipped to solve problems.
  • Greater collaboration and transparency across departments, helping teams work through challenges with more shared context, alignment and accountability.
  • An ownership mindset at more levels of the organization, supported by practical leadership tools that help managers lead with confidence and contribute to strategic priorities.
  • Improved trust and employee satisfaction. Libertana connects its continued investment in leadership to its recognition as one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work. Year over year, Libertana’s employee satisfaction survey scores have increased.

What’s next? Libertana is exploring delivery methods to make the program accessible to emerging leaders and to the organization at large. It’s evaluating ways to align incentive goals more closely with strategic priorities.

With 52 leaders trained and more development underway, Libertana has a stronger foundation to sustain momentum and scale with confidence.
