Tara Johnson B.A., B.S. is a Senior Manager in the firm’s state and local tax practice. Tara has over 17 years’ experience in public accounting and assisting clients in a variety of industries with federal, state and local compliance. She currently focuses her time in the spaces of property tax and sales/use tax.
Tara oversees property tax compliance in multiple states for over 600 Wipfli clients, including:
- Coordination of preparation and review of period returns for variety of industries
- Exploration of qualifying exemptions and submission of applications
- Determination of most favorable classification of assets
- Response to assessor inquiries
- Review of notices of assessment
- Appeal of assessments, as warranted
- Serving as the liaison/intermediary between clients and taxing authorities in order to resolve contentious assessment issues
Within the space of sales/use tax, Tara has been heavily involved in educating and advising clients and non-clients alike on the impact of the state and local economic nexus thresholds for sales tax, and in monitoring continued state and local developments in response to South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. In addition, Tara specializes in the following consultative offerings:
- Nexus studies
- State voluntary disclosure agreements
- Responding to state inquiries on nexus matters
- State audit defense
- Research of sales tax treatment for transactions in a multitude of industries
- Structuring of captive transportation entity to capitalize on common/contract carrier sales/use tax exemptions
- State and local tax registrations
