As a small company with a single, large government contract, Shared Spectrum Company (SSC) relied on QuickBooks to manage accounting and Microsoft Excel to manage projects. But nine years later, it was clear they needed a better system. Switching to Microsoft Dynamics SL ended up saving the company an entire week’s worth of time each month in accounting, reporting and other processes.

The Challenge

SSC was growing. It had taken on more than a dozen government contracts and projects, but tying together financial and project management data was only possible by running month-end financials — a process that took around 32 hours per month. SSC realized it was also spending valuable time — eight hours a month — manually entering timecard information into QuickBooks. None of these processes were priming the company for continued growth.

The Solution

To put more solid infrastructure in place to accompany its rapid growth, SSC worked with Wipfli to implement Microsoft Dynamics SL. The solution was flexible, cloud based and required far less maintenance and support. The ability to centralize data and provide real-time reporting meant that SSC could automate its timecard processing, view up-to-date project financials throughout the month and even better comply with Defense Contract Audit Agency regulations.

The Results

With Microsoft Dynamics SL in place, SSC improved project accounting, eased reporting and laid a solid IT foundation for ongoing growth. SSC is now saving more than 40 hours a month by automating its processes. SSC believes that Microsoft Dynamics SL will enable continued growth as it develops new technology that will allow it to expand into the commercial space.
