Rural healthcare patient survey

Consumer survey shows how patients navigated care during pandemic

Wipfli surveyed 1,045 adult consumers on their experiences with rural healthcare providers. The results, collected in March 2022, showed that even though the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic strained healthcare systems, more than 90 percent of respondents are satisfied with the level of service and expertise with their rural healthcare provider.

The other findings from the survey include:

  • A quarter of consumers have shopped around for pricing on a rural healthcare provider’s website for services or procedures.
  • 20 percent said pricing lists provided by healthcare systems influenced their decision to receive care.
  • Almost 30 percent of people looked for prices on a rural healthcare provider’s website and weren’t able to find it.
  • Over the past two years since the COVID-19 pandemic, 37 percent said they experienced longer wait times at their rural healthcare provider.
  • During that time, 36 percent said they used telehealth services with their local healthcare provider.
  • Approximately 30 percent said they prefer using telehealth over in-person visits to their healthcare provider.
  • More than half (53 percent) have put off procedures or checkups over the past two years due to COVID-19.

The survey of was done in advance of Wipfli’s two-day rural healthcare conference to help leaders understand patient perspectives on the COVID-19 pandemic and hospital price transparency tools.
