Super Bowl Sunday has become an American ritual of football, innovative advertising, halftime entertainment, and a wide array of chips/dip and other decadent offerings. Each year, we invite friends and family to our home to enjoy this annual last hurrah for the football season while we cheer our favorite team and give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each new commercial that cost its sponsor big bucks.
From a comfortable spot on the couch, the end result on TV looks so effortless, and it’s easy to think that every part of it just fell into place on its own. But I’ll bet if people behind the scenes were asked, they would have a very different story to tell.
The truth is, very little, if any, of it fell into place on its own, and it was anything but effortless or easy. Simple as it might sound, the people calling the shots started out by defining their goals and then determining how they would achieve them. It’s all about strategy and planning. Take that blank sheet of paper and plotting the offense and defense, making sure the right people are in the right positions, establishing short-term and long-term goals and defining how they will be realized. The list goes on and on.
